Greg Malcolm and Bastion on Interregnum

The experimental folk musician and underground icon, Greg Malcolm, will release his next album, called Leather and Lacy, on Interregnum Records. The album consists of live versions of the jazz tunes created by the legendary Steve Lacy. The tapes are from the Wellington Jazz Festival 2006, where Malcolm dresses Lacy’s melodies in a free folk influenced suite of noise. Malcolm is known for playing three guitars at the same time: two with each foot and one in the conventional way (with his hands and arms), and this is how he performs also this songs. The outcome has recently been edited and mastered by Kai Mikalsen.

Greg Malcolm has earlier received good critics world wide for his albums such as Hung (Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, 2006), Swimming in It ((K-RAA-K) 3, 2005) and Homesick for Nowhere (Corpus Hermeticum, 2002), as well as his live performances. He has also released albums with innovators such as Tetuzi Akiyama and Bruce Russel (The Dead C).

At the same time, the Italian duo Bastion releases its debut album on the same label. Bastion consists of the young but wide known and respected psych-rock/free-jazz musician Valerio Cosi and post rock guitarist Jukka Reverberi. The result is a four track long album with beautiful drones and subtle noise, with haphazardly portions of improvised and primitive jazz surfacing from under the guitar layers. Cosi and Reverberi never met in real life and never had a chat. They characterize Bastion as a concept of distance.

Cosi is a familiar personality in the avant-garde culture as a saxophonist and a multiplayer devoted to free-jazz/psychedelic rock/ethnic drones/electronics, with quite a few releases on his repertoire. In the past he has released his works on labels such as Ruralfaune, Digitalis and Foxglove. Reverberi is on the other side a big name in also a commercial manner because of the infamous post rock ensemble Giardini di Mirò (where he plays guitar) which has toured with amongst others great bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Ulan Bator, Karate and Unwound.

The date for release has not yet been decided, but sometime in November seems likely. Both albums will be released in digipak sleeves and are limited to 500 copies each. Art work is done by Trine + Kim Designstudio.
